Marrakech Medina and Jemaa el-Fna: Plan Your Visit

The medina invites you to walk, observe, and take your time. Preparing a few landmarks helps you enjoy its alleys and Jemaa el-Fna without turning your day into a series of appointments.

A heritage to discover gradually

Marrakech's medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its heritage includes the Koutoubia Mosque, the ramparts and gates, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Saadian Tombs and the El Badi Palace.

These sites are not all visited in the same way. Choose the monuments that interest you, check their access conditions and group stops by sector. A walk through the streets and an entry into a monument are two different experiences.

Jemaa el-Fna and the souks

Jemaa el-Fna is a lively meeting place for dining and cultural expressions. The square can serve as a landmark in your exploration of the medina, without being the sole objective of the walk.

In the souks, leave room for curiosity while keeping a return point in mind. If you plan to make a purchase or use a service, clarify the price and details before agreeing. Ask for someone's consent before photographing them: it's a simple courtesy that facilitates exchanges.

Walk according to your group's wishes

A successful route depends on the group accompanying you. With children, someone who has difficulty walking or a first visit to Marrakech, it's best to plan breaks and an itinerary that can be easily shortened.

If you choose to be accompanied, check the steps, conditions and price with the service provider. Keep a clear distinction between the advice of a guide and the services included with your accommodation: the stay at Chez Najia does not automatically include guided tours.

Prepare your return to the accommodation

Keep the accommodation address and an accessible starting point in your phone. From Boulevard Prince Moulay Abdellah, check the route options when preparing your outing; traffic and mode of transport can change the time required.

In the evening, keep the option to return calmly rather than adding a last visit to an already full programme. The site calendar allows you to prepare your stay dates without booking nights.

Before you go

  • Keep a clear landmark and the accommodation address for the return.
  • Check the entry conditions of each monument separately.
  • Ask for consent before photographing someone.

Practical questions

Are the medina and Jemaa el-Fna the same thing?

Jemaa el-Fna is an iconic square in Marrakech; the medina refers to a much larger historic area.

Is it necessary to visit all the monuments in one day?

It is not necessary. Choose the places that interest you and allow time for walking and breaks.
